Which Mahjong rules do we play?

Manhattan Mahjong Center offers American and Chinese Mahjong, with a Japanese Riichi program in development. Our open-play sessions, guided play, weekend lessons, and tournaments listed here use American Mahjong; Saturday morning beginner lessons cover Chinese Mahjong. Chinese rules vary, so ask Tara which ruleset your class uses. Each program identifies its variation.

Do we have a Japanese Riichi Mahjong program?

We are designing our Japanese Riichi Mahjong program and hope to launch by November 2026.

Do we play online?

You can play Japanese Riichi Mahjong on Mahjong Soul and Tenhou, or explore multiple variations on Mahjong Time. These are independent online platforms. Our listed club lessons and playing sessions meet in person in Manhattan.

Do I need to bring a group?

You can ask Tara to help assemble an afternoon table. Tuesday evenings welcome individuals, partners, and full tables. Beginner series begin once four students are ready.

Which program should I choose?

For American Mahjong, start with beginner lessons or a weekend bootcamp. Guided play supports advanced beginners and returning players; open play is for those ready to play at a table.

Should I bring a NMJL card?

The Tuesday evening listing asks you to bring the 2026 NMJL Hands and Rules Card. Ask your teacher what you need for a beginner lesson or other session.

Where do we meet?

At Park 55, 110 East 55th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues. Afternoon open play is on the 12th floor; Tuesday evenings are on the 6th floor. Confirm the floor for your lesson or event.

Anything else I should know?

The venue is fragrance-free. Please avoid perfume and other scented products. Confirm schedules, prices, materials, and availability before visiting.
