American Mahjong
American Mahjong, also spelled Mah Jongg, uses an annual card of winning hands from the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL). Jokers and the Charleston tile exchange give this version its distinctive style.
Our Midtown Manhattan programs include small-group beginner lessons, Thursday guided play, weekday afternoon and Tuesday evening open play, and Sunday tournaments.
Japanese Riichi Mahjong
Japanese Riichi Mahjong combines hand-building with careful defense. A winning hand needs a scoring pattern called a yaku; declaring riichi announces that a closed hand needs just one more tile to win. Discards, bonus tiles, and the choice to attack or defend shape each round.

Chinese Mahjong
Mahjong has roots in China and includes many regional traditions. Hong Kong, Sichuan, and Mahjong Competition Rules differ in scoring and winning hands. Our Chinese Mahjong beginner lesson listing is Saturday, 10 am–noon; Tara coordinates the class and its specific ruleset.
Online Mahjong
Play Japanese Riichi Mahjong on Mahjong Soul (Majsoul) or Tenhou. Mahjong Time offers American, Riichi, and several Chinese rulesets. These multiplayer platforms let you practice against other players from home.
